Cleaning your brushes

Today I am writing this post because many participants from our beauty workshops had questions concerning, how to clean your makeup brushes! Well, here's how to do it:
Cleaning your makeup brushes is very important. It will save you money, time and good skin!
  • You will save money because they will last you a long time, so you don’t have to buy new ones.
  • You will save time because the application will be much easier. You won’t have to redo your makeup because it will be fresh and flawless. Know that makeup colors can change, becoming darker or more orange due to oxidation and to mixing with skin oils or dust, making a mess of your daily makeup routine.
  • You will also save your skin- Imagine all the bacteria, skin oils and old, oxidized colors that remain on your dirty brushes...this will cause you breakouts. Especially if you suffer from oily skin or acne already, make sure you're always using a clean makeup brush to minimize bacterial problems that may increase your skin trouble. That’s why I say: cleaning your brushes will save your face.
Remember to always clean your brushes when you first buy them. You might notice that some new brushes will shed but that’s normal and they should stop shedding after a few uses.
I usually wash my makeup brushes using soap or shampoo. I use my daughter’s baby shampoo because it's gentle.
  1. Start by wetting the brush bristles with lukewarm water.
  2. Then apply the soap/shampoo in your palm and swirl around to remove any makeup. Never scrub, or the hairs will start to come out.
  3. When the brushes seem clean (free of color), rinse the bristles under running water.
  4. Gently squeeze the excess water out.
  5. Then shape the bristles while wet and let them dry to preserve their smoothness.
  6. Always lay them flat on a towel instead of standing them on end. It can damage either the bristles or handle of the brush.
However, lipstick brushes may need extra care. It might be sticky and harder to wash because of the emollients in lip colors. Wash them with a gentle oil cleanser that you may already use for your face to work out the lipstick from the brush bristles.
You can also buy special products for cleaning your makeup brushes. Just spray on and wipe on a paper towel. It dries quickly so you can switch from one brush to the next without having to worry about contaminating the other with different colors.
Follow the cleaning instructions that may come with your makeup brushes in case they have special requirements.
DON’T soak the entire brush in water! I used to do that many years ago and had to throw away some of my brushes. The handle detached from the ferrule because there was no more glue to hold the two pieces together! Oups!! (The ferrule is the metal ring that binds the bristles or hair to the handle.)
I clean my brushes once a week to keep them working properly. A great tip is to wash them at night so they have all night to dry...especially for kabuki’s/flat tops ones because the bristles are denser and take more time to dry.
If a brush becomes stained or no longer have the same shape, throw it out and get a new one.
If this method is not enough to clean your super dirty brushes...because you never cleaned them since you first bought them 2 years ago, let me know and I will suggest stronger methods for you!
