How to pluck your eyebrows!

One of the key features for a clean, radiant face are well defined and well shaped eyebrows- something that many women forget about. No matter what you do to your face with cosmetics, if you have bushy, messy eyebrows, there will always be something that just isn't right.... So one of the key things to remember this year is to pay attention to those brows! You can either give it a go and try to define and clean them yourselves or you can go to a pro. For those of you who want to save a bit of money and have the courage to pluck those annoying little hairs off your face, let's keep reading.

Things you'll be needing to pluck your own eyebrows:

  • A good set of basic tweezers. I like mine that have nice sharp edges. I have one that is smoothed out and rounded at the corners, it's safer for my face (I guess) but I find it less effective.
  • A white pencil to help you shape the contours of your eyebrow. You can try to go at it without the help of an explicit contour but if you're a novice, I highly suggest against it!
  • Good lighting

Some tips to ease the pain:

  • Pluck right after a hot shower, your pores will be nice and open at that time.
  • Pluck in the direction of the growth.
  • Like MichellePhan shows us in the below video, you can use ice to numb the skin.

Now after you've cleaned and shaped your brows, it's also nice to fill them in. In a perfect world, we all have perfectly luscious eyebrows and we'd never make mistakes plucking... we don't live in a perfect world :) In the video, Michelle uses eyebrow shadow which is easier to control and easier to use for a natural look. If you prefer to use a pencil, remember to use light and short strokes to immitate actual hairs.

Some tips for filling in your brows:

  • Choose a shade that is 1 or 2 shades lighter then your hair. I highly do NOT recommend going for a pure black color as that is usually just too harsh on any Asian face. Charcoal or dark brown usually does the trick.
  • If you're using a pencil and it becomes obvious, take a Q-tip and smudge, smudge, smudge for a more natural look.

Sometimes, simply plucking is not enough if you have rather long eyebrow hairs. That's where those small, eyebrow grooming scissors come in handy to trim those longer hairs. Tip: Using a bare mascara wand, comb your hairs in their natural direction to make them neat, see any hairs just sticking out even though you've already plucked and done a good job? Use the scissors to trim the excess length and voila! Clean brows.
